For Your Information:
School Start time and absences:
Our Special or Itinerant Classes are Art, Music, Technology, and Physical Education. The students will have one of these classes each day and these classes will rotate on a four-day schedule. I will try to remind the children each day as to what the next day Special Class is so that they are prepared with gym shoes or whatever they may need for each class.
Snacks:
Birthdays:
Toys:
Change of Buses:
Monthly Reading Expectations:
Accelerated Reader Points
Each student must read, test, and earn 6 A.R. points a month. All reading stories and teacher read books can be tested on. (The 6 pt. A.R. goal is subject to change throughout the year.) Check your child's RAINBOW folder to see how they are advancing on their monthly points.
Book Reports
Each student is required to complete a book report. These are usually assigned every other month. The book needs to be a teacher approved chapter book in the student's reading range and completed on the form given by the teacher. Look for the first book report information near the beginning of October.
Classroom Management:
School Start time and absences:
- School begins promptly at 8:15 A.M. and ends at 3:01 P.M. Breakfast is available in the cafeteria from 8:00-8:15 A.M. Please Be On Time! Third grade lunch and noon recess is between 11:42-12:12 P.M. We will also take a 15 minute A.M. recess break and a 15 min. P.M. recess break.
- Please call the office to let us know if your child will be absent and the reason for their absence. I can gather homework for your student to be picked up at the end of that school day.
- Students are expected to come to school prepared with a backpack, their "RAINBOW" folder, and any homework that needs to be returned.
- Study sheets for Spelling and Reading Vocabulary will go home each Friday for the following week. Spelling and Reading Vocabulary and usage tests will be on Fridays. In the event of a four day week, these tests will be one day earlier. There will also be a Reading Comprehension quiz on the last day of the week to check for understanding of the weekly story.
- Reading books will go home with students on Monday. Students will be expected to read the weekly story with a listener and complete a short homework assignment which will be due the next day. Please make sure your child also returns their reading book. The reading book must be with them in school each day.
- Math homework will go home on Tuesdays and be due on Thursdays. Please feel free to look over any homework assignments your child brings home. Your guidance and modeling with homework helps your child progress to the levels expected of a third grader.
- Science and Social Studies are graded non-competitively in third grade. Most assignments in these classes will be done in groups within the classroom.

Snacks:
- Students may bring in a small healthy snack if they choose to do so. I only provide about 5 minutes before A.M. recess for their snack. A good example of a healthy snack might be 10 to 15 pretzels or fish crackers, a piece of fruit, or a small handful of nuts. Water bottles are acceptable in the classroom, please only provide water.
Birthdays:
- Birthdays are acknowledged during class time. A birthday treat is welcome, but not required. Please do not have your child distribute invitations for parties at school unless the whole class is being invited. Feelings can be easily hurt if some are not included.
Toys:
- Please leave toys and electronics at home unless asked to bring them in for a special occasion.
- On occasion it will be necessary for your child to bring money to school. Always send money in a sealed envelope with your child's full name, the purpose for the money (lunch $, book order, fund raiser, etc.),
- and my name.
Change of Buses:
- If your child is NOT taking their regular bus home after school, they MUST have a note indicating their plan for pick up or change of buses and signed by a parent or guardian.

Classroom Management:
Classroom Rules
1. Listen Carefully
2. Follow directions
3. Work quietly when working alone or with partners
4. Respect other people and property
5. Be responsible for your actions
6. Work and play safely
7. Always Do Your Best!
To monitor student behavior we will be using a behavior chart with a card flip method. Everyone begins each day with green "Good Behavior" cards in their chart. Students who forget to follow the rules must replace their green card with a yellow or red card.
A green card means "You're doing great!"
A yellow card means "Warning! Pay more attention to your behavior and inappropriate behavior will be recorded in the behavior book."
A red card means "You lose a recess and record your behavior in the behavior book."
If a student's behavior is considered major (ie. disrespectful, hurtful, stealing, or cheating) a visit to the principal's office will be necessary and parents will be informed.
The rewards for students who follow rules and complete assignments are verbal praise, Caught Being Good Slips, treats, stickers and opportunities to participate in classroom incentives. Students with 4 or more misbehavior will not participate in monthly classroom incentives.
If you have any questions about these rules or expectations please feel free to contact me any time.
